artist statement
I kind of just stumbled over this idea after looking at a bunch of photographs in my Vernacular Photography class. There were a few mugshots where the person's name and crime were written above their heads, floating strangely, seemingly unconnected and random, but somehow perfect. I started off exploring this idea by emulating these photographs, but it quickly morphed into small phrases alluding to some unknown voice or character and then to little doodles trying to grasp at some event only privy to the individuals in the scene. I really enjoy what the text and drawings do to the photographs, they both reinforce and enhance the image, creating this weird symbiotic relationship. It was really excellent being able to combine this practice with my leanings towards candid photography. They both play on intuitive practices where everything is shaped by the environment and circumstances. It really seems to give me some authority towards my photos with which I wish to continue expanding this idea in the future.
